A WIN FOR WOMEN’S FOOTBALL

Illustrated by Megan Bevis

Barclays have announced that it will be the first ever sponsor of the Women’s Super League in

a deal dubbed the “biggest ever investment in UK women’s sport by a brand” by the Football Association. The deal will be a three-year partnership and is believed to be worth in excess of £10 million. It will start from next season and the competition will be officially renamed the Barclays FA Women’s Super League and will include a prize of £500,000.

Women’s football is finally gaining the sponsorships it deserves after years of men’s football getting the better deals. Visa recently became the main partner sponsor of the Women’s Champions League and the European Championship. Adidas also sponsors both the male and female England football teams, recently confirming that all of the female athletes at the Women’s World Cup will receive the same bonuses as male footballers would.
